Apparel, Merchandise & Promotional Guidelines for

Students & Organizations

If you are a student at the University of Missouri, these guidelines are for you. When ordering apparel, merchandise and promotional items, or hosting a fundraiser, follow these guidelines to ensure your items comply with University policy.

Recognized Student Organizations

Recognized student organizations, including Fraternities and Sororities, must use a licensed vendor to order apparel, merchandise and promotional items. Only licensed vendors are allowed to legally reproduce University trademarks (logos, marks, verbiage) on products.

How to Order Products

    1. Choose a licensed vendor.
    2. Work with the licensed vendor to select your product(s) within your budget.
    3. Follow the Student Organization Design Guidelines. Whether submitting a design to a licensed vendor or working with them to create the design, the guidelines must be followed.
    4. The licensed vendors will submit a Product Request Form to our office along with the final artwork for approval.
    5. Any changes needed to meet guidelines will be communicated to the vendor.

Design Guidelines

Follow these guidelines to ensure your product meet University guidelines.

Required Elements
These items must be on every product ordered.
Officially recognized organization name or compliant student organization logo

The design must be specific to your organization or event.
Optional University Trademarks
The University signatures, marks and verbiage may be used when following guidelines.
University or Unit Signature, Stacked MU, Truman the Tiger, Spirit Tiger head and Athletic logo.
When using a signature, stacked MU, or Tiger mark, they must be kept separate and apart from graphics, text and other logos.
Trademarked verbiage in designs:
University of Missouri®, Missouri®, MU™, Missouri Tigers®, Tigers™, Mizzou®, Mizzou Tigers™, Mizzou-rah™, Truman™, The Zou™, MIZ™, ZOU™, MIZZOUMADE™
Do Not Include
These may not be included on the item or in the design.
Athletic font or similar looking fonts.
the UM System seal
Trademarks from other entities or derivatives of those marks.
Current student athlete’s name, nickname, likeness or picture.
The university’s name or logo may not be used in connection with the promotion of firearms, alcohol, tobacco or other drugs or in connection with pornography or other forms of expression limited by law.

Individual Students

If you are a student who is unaffiliated with a student organization or department, these guidelines are for you. Please observe them to meet university policy.

Individual students may purchase retail clothing items and take them to a licensed vendor to add additional text.

  • Text may not violate university policy, and items cannot be resold for profit.
  • The text may not use the Athletic font or similar-looking fonts.
  • The UM system seal may not be added.
  • Trademarks from other entities or derivatives of those marks may not be added.
  • Current student athlete’s name, nickname, likeness or picture may not be added.
  • The university’s name or logo may not be used in connection with the promotion of firearms, alcohol, tobacco or other drugs or in connection with pornography or other forms of expression limited by law.

Fundraisers

Students and student organizations who wish to sell apparel, merchandise and promotional items to support their class, department or organization must follow these ordering and design guidelines. Note: Your fundraiser must also meet Student Affairs guidelines.

Approval

All designs must be approved by identity@missouri.edu before promoting your fundraiser or collecting orders.

Licensed Vendors

A licensed vendor must be used to produce your items.

Online Stores

If you’d like to use an online store for order placement and sales, you must contact identity@missouri.edu to be assigned an appropriate vendor.

Fundraiser Design Guidelines

Your design must follow all guidelines for university marks and be specific to your class, student organization or department (must include signature).

Must include class year, student organization name or unit signature:
For example: Mizzou Physical Therapy Class of 2024, Pre-Physical Therapy Organization, or Physical Therapy unit signature.
May use these Mizzou marks in a separate location:
University or Unit Signature, Truman the Tiger, Spirit Tiger head and Athletic logo.

Unrecognized Student Orgs

If you are involved in an unrecognized student organization, you will need to become recognized by Student Affairs to use any of Mizzou’s trademarks on apparel, merchandise and promotional items.
