address

Address a letter or an envelope, but never address a problem. A problem should be dealt with, considered, tackled, coped with or discussed: At the staff meeting, the dean and the chancellor discussed (not addressed) admission requirement.

  • Do not use address alone as a synonym for a speech or talk: Bill Doe’s speech/presentation (not address) on the campus master plan impressed the faculty.
  • See keynote address.
